Ice Navigation Basic Course

Scope (Target audience) : This course has been designed to meet the requirements of regulation of the STCW convention Table A-II/1, A-II/2, A-II/3.
Course provides guidance for all deck officers operational and management level. Program can be tailored to specific shipping company operations.

Objective : The trainees who successfully complete this course will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of ship operations in ice.

Course content : 

  • Introduction
  • Ice physics, formation, growth, ageing and stages of melt
  • Ice types, effects of wind and current
  • Regulations and publications
  • Vessel characteristics: vessel types, hull designs, ice strengthening requirements
  • Basic rules for maneuvering in ice
  • Navigation in ice covered waters
  • Passage planning in or near ice
  • Icebreaker Operations
  • Effects of extreme low temperatures
  • Assessment

Duration: 24 hours

  • Identification card or passport
